The role of sealant in LOW-E glass

LOW-E glass is called Low-E glass, which is the abbreviation of Low-Emissivity in English. LOW-E glass is the film system containing one or two or even three layers of silver layer coated on the surface of the glass by vacuum magnetron gradient method, so that the emissivity E of the glass can be lowered from 0.84 to less than 0.15, which reduces the absorption of energy or controls the indoor and outdoor energy exchanges.

Characteristics of LOW-E glass

  1. High infrared reflectivity, directly blocking far-infrared heat radiation.
  2. Low surface emissivity, almost no absorption of external energy, small thermal inertia.
  3. Wide range of shading coefficient SC, which can control the amount of solar radiation transmission according to the need to apply to the needs of different regions.

Sealing of LOW-E glass

With the gradual improvement of building energy-saving requirements in various countries, LOW-E insulating glass has become the preferred product for windows and doors and curtain wall glass, and its thermal conductivity K value can even be 1.0W/m2-K or so, and at present, the side of LOW-E insulating glass is generally used in a two-channel sealing.

The first seal uses hot melt butyl sealant to ensure the airtightness of the insulating glass, and the second seal uses silicone sealant or polysulfide sealant to ensure the stability of the insulating glass structure. Silicone sealant has good sealant properties and UV aging resistance, can be applied to all the insulating glass, and hidden frame, semi-hidden frame glass curtain wall insulating glass two sealing must be used silicone structural sealant.

Silicone structural sealant in the insulating glass plays a very important role, once the bond failure produces two major hazards: First, the atmospheric water vapor will enter the cavity of the insulating glass, resulting in condensation, frost, LOW-E film deterioration, appearance deterioration, etc.; Second, it is easy to appear in the insulating glass outside the piece of falling off, bringing serious safety hazards.
